An autistic savant is a term used to describe a tiny minority of autistic people who have incredibly advanced skills in one particular area of sport, the arts, the sciences or a huge capacity to remember facts. An autistic savant is not exactly the same as Savant Syndrome and it differs from our concepts of genius. Anyone of any neurotype can have Savant Syndrome, for instance, following brain damage in adulthood.

What seems to identify as a savant, is that this one amazing skill stands out against the rest of that person’s, often limited, abilities.

We really don’t need to go all Rain Man here and get hung up on this concept as, it is so incredibly rare, it’s considered there are only a few hundred people in the entire world who are savants, and only about two thirds of those are thought to be autistic.
