Anger, and rage are all to frequent features in autistic people’s lives. This is a huge topic on its own, as it has so many causes: frustration, anxiety, helplessness, being misunderstood, overwhelm, sensory difficulties, food intolerances, injustice and so many more. There are so many beautifully written, honest accounts of how destructive this can be for neurodivergent people: Pete Wharmby’s excellent book – Untypical – has a pleasingly frank dose of justifiable anger in it. For me, it’s Fern Brady’s Strong Female Character that really nails the unrelenting exhaustion, confusion and mistreatment of undiagnosed and misdiagnosed autistic people – it’s a brutal, funny, brilliant read.
